The mission of the Photographic Section of the Academy of Science and Art of Pittsburgh is to provide an environment for individual study and advancement in the knowledge, practice and appreciation of the art of photography. To fulfill this purpose, the Section supports lectures, competitions, field trips and information interchange.
The club meets the second, third and fourth Tuesday of each month, September through May. Visitors are alway welcome to attend our meetings, which start at 7:30 pm. However, many of the members arrive between 7:00 and 7:30 to talk about photography. This socialization is a good time to interact with other photographers.
Many of the meetings during the year are devoted to displaying and critiquing projected digital images and prints. A panel of judges evaluates each entry, and members and visitors discuss the entries. These meetings are an excellent way to improve your photographic skills.
Other meetings during the year are devoted to programs such as lectures, demonstrations, travelogues, or even on-site photo shoots.
The club sponsors the historically significant Pittsburgh Salon of Photographic Art which has been an annual event since 1914. A panel of judges evaluates member’s submissions and awards are given for entries that are accepted and for the best submissions in several categories.
The club also conducts a year-end judging of the images that received a Certificate of Excellence in any of the six annual competitions. Of these, the Image of the Year is selected and added to the historical archives.
