This may be old hat to many, but I only figured it out yesterday so my guess is there are some who are unaware of it.

I never used soft proofing until I got my HP B9180.  I guess, because it uses pigment inks, it doesn't print images exactly the way they are displayed on the screen.  I have been using soft proofing to get an idea of how the image would look, but that was about it.

Yesterday I noticed that when soft proofing was on, contrast was lower.  I wondered what would happen if I adjusted contrast while soft proofing.  It produced significantly better results.  I then started to do all my editing with soft proofing turned on.  It makes a huge difference with the HP.

This won't matter with printers that duplicate the screen, like my old Canon i9100, but if you click soft proofing and the image changes noticeably, try editing with it turned on.
